We often forget about cocktail tables, but they’re a great solution for living rooms where you may not want a coffee table. Traditionally, your coffee table should be 12 to 18 inches away from your sofa—any more or less than that will feel uncomfortably close or far.

While every room is sized differently you don’t want to have your coffee table so far from the sofa that you can’t reach your drink or put your feet up after a long day (depending on your house rules of course). The standard height of a coffee table typically ranges from 16 to 18 inches, a size that pairs well with a standard sofa. It's important to make sure that there are a couple of feet between the coffee table and sofa, and between the sofa and any chairs. These are great for placing lamps upon and for giving balance to sofas that float in a room. If you will have a couch or chair facing a tv, they should be seven to eight feet apart for best viewing.
