How to sand a table for beginners!

Sand down coffee table. Apply furniture oil to the coffee table. This helps keep your table looking smooth, gives the stain a better finish, and allows the coats to bond together. You are just smoothing it out for the next layer of stain.

If the coffee table is unfinished, this will prepare the wood for painting. You don’t need to try and remove the old finish! This is the story of how not one, but two tables got a complete refresh thanks to a little elbow grease and, well, a lot of sanding.

This is heavy enough to cut through old finishes. Be sure to let the stain dry completely. Do not press hard as you don’t want to remove the stain.

Clean the table with a soft cloth to remove any dust. 2) dust off the surface you are about to sand, theres no point clogging up a sanding disk with just dust. Ensure that the sanding motion goes in the same direction as the grain of the wood.

You get bonus points for doing this all by hand. Once staining is complete, apply a protective top coat. Lay a drop cloth down before working.

To sand, rub the abrasive side of the sandpaper against the surface of the table repeatedly in a circular motion. Rub the oil into the table with a rag, adding coats of oil until the desired depth of color has been reached. I used 400 grit sandpaper.

Be sure to play around with different ways of using the coffee cup to get different types of stains on the table. 3) attach your sanding disc/paper. Wipe table to remove dust from sand paper.

However i didnt want to give up the vision i had and went ahead and stained the top any way and the front of the drawers. So i started sanding my tables with 80 grit sandpaper on a sanding block. I did it with my coffee table.

Pour some coffee into a dish and use your coffee cup to apply it to the table. Sand down the entire coffee table, going with the grain, until it is completely smooth. Apply a wood conditioner according to the directions on the package.

Here it is all finished: Add another coat of polyurethane, and sand the wooden coffee table again. Sand the wooden coffee table (if needed) to smooth and prepare it to be painted.

You also want to give your piece a quick, light sand with 220 grit sandpaper or sanding sponge. Use tack cloth to get off all the sanding dust. Very lightly sand the table down.

Buff and wax, buff and wax… eventually it’ll look good enough to quit. You can get splotches, thick rings, faint rings, incomplete rings, a splatter of tiny droplets, and a light smear of a cup being moved along the surface. You will want to start with a coarser lower grit paper to start with, perhaps a 60 or 80 grit, then work your way higher/smoother in grit to obtain a smoother finish.

Wipe the surface of the entire table using the tack cloth. I sure did, doesnt take much to sand though. Just a light scuff is all that’s needed.
